At the beginning of the chapter, we are presented with a view of the now normal life on the island; Ralph, Piggy, and Simon responsible for building shelters, Jack and his group are responsible for hunting pigs and maintaining the signal fire, and the little boys just play and swim around. As time passes on the island, Jack decides that, using red clay and charcoal, to paint his face and further develop his signature look as the alpha hunter. Roger throws rocks at henry, but for some reason purposely misses him. Fast forward to Ralph, Piggy and Simon swimming alongside the littleuns. A ship is spotted in the far distance. Ralph, franticly runs to the nonexistent signal fire and is saddened when he sees the fire was not lit. After a while passes Jack and his group of boys return from their hunt chanting with a pig on their backs. Ralph scolds them for not having the signal fire still going. Jack gets infuriated, and punches Piggy in the face, breaking one lens off of his glasses. The boys apologies and begin making the pig. Everyone eventually eats the pig, and Ralph reasserts his dominance by calling for a meeting .
