The Conch was found by Ralph and Piggy, and they decided to use this Conch as a symbol of authority. This Conch serves as a leading symbol, because whoever had the Conch had the right to speak. Like our society today, we have symbols of authority and the conch serves as an authority symbol to the boys deserted on the island. When one has the Conch, the others have to respect him. The older boys were the ones seeking for control over the Conch, to be able to have absolute power. As soon as Jack starts to get more power, the Conch loses its control over the boys. In society, if the government loses its power, people would go into complete chaos. The Conch is later destroyed by Roger, one of Jacks followers. The narration in chapter 5 mentions that, " The world, that understandable and lawful world, was slipping away", this means that the "lawful world" was destroyed because the conch lost its power.
