A Character Summary of Ralph (Main Protagonist)
Ralph is the main protagonist in the novel, The Lord of the Flies. Ralph is a schoolboy with broad shoulders, which gives him the build of a boxer. Right from the beginning of the novel, Ralph is elected to be leader for the group of boys. He establishes rules, and gives everyone a chance to speak their mind (Showing us that he is a believer in democracy). Ralph is very developed when it comes to making rational decisions and thinking ahead. He stays calm, yet he is assertive in his tone and delivery of his messages.
Ralph sets himself apart from the other boys in the group. He uses critical thinking and leads with reason. One thing he is very good at is thinking ahead. Ralph thinks for the whole group rather than himself. He is handsome, and his looks actually play an important role in him becoming the leader in this novel.
“You're a beast and a swine and a bloody, bloody thief!” (Chapter 11)
“Which is better, law and rescue, or hunting and breaking things up?” (Chapter 11)
