Chapter 9 Summary
Simon wakes up to a storm and his nose is bleeding. He runs back to the hill confused and sees the pilot dead with a parachute. He starts to vomit after the seeing the dead body. He untangles the parachute and goes to the tell the boys that the beast is not real. Piggy and Ralph decide to go to Jack's feast hoping to smooth things over. Jack acts like a dictator and treats the boys in his tribe like slaves. As the rain hits, Ralph asks how Jack is going to deal with the storm with no shelter, and he tells his tribe to chant and dance. Even Ralph and Piggy join the chant and see a strange figure coming out of the darkness. They don't realize that it's Simon and mistake him for the beast. They attack him and he tries to tell them that it him. They don't hear him and he trips over the cliff. The boys follow him down and kill him. The storm strongly hits and Simon's dead body floats away in the ocean. The pilot's dead body also floats away and the boys scream, terrified of the body.
"[The boys] found themselves eager to take a place in this demented but partly secure society. They were glad to touch the brown backs of the fence that hemmed in the terror [of the makeshift beast] and made it governable."
