Chapter 8 Summary
The next day, the boys are in complete chaos over the monster. Piggy is confused about the the stories the other boys are telling him about the monster. Jack tells the boys about the monster and how Ralph isn't fit to be a leader. The boys disagree about his opinions about Ralph and still want him to be the leader. Jack gets mad and leaves and tells the boys that whoever wants to can join him. Ralph is very worried but Piggy is very relieved that Jack is gone. Ralph slowly grows more hopeless and sad, but Piggy distracts him by suggesting they build a new signal fire. In the night, a lot of the boys sneak away to join Jack. Jack makes a new tribe and makes himself chief. Roger kills a sow and cuts of its' head. He attaches the head on a sake as a sacrifice for the beast. Jack's tribe goes down by Ralph and Piggy and tell them about their feast and invite them in hopes that more people will join their new tribe. Simon sneaks away to the area he was earlier, but now there's the sows head. He stares at it intently and sees it come to life. He feels as though the Lord of the Flies is telling him that he will never escape from within him. He is instantly shocked and faints.
“There isn’t anyone to help you. Only me. And I’m the Beast. . . . Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill!”
