Chapter 5 Summary
Chapter 5 begins with Ralph having assembled a meeting. He begins to explain ground rules, and what every person on the island is responsible for doing. Ralph explains that Jack's group was responsible for the fire, but they failed to keep it going. He also says that the boys are slacking off and aren't even using the bathrooms correctly. Then, the topic of the beastie comes up, which throws the boys into chaos. The elders- Jack, Ralph and Piggy, explain that there are no such things as a beastie or even ghosts on the island, which instead of calming the kids, makes them even more on edge. Jack says if there is a beastie on the island, he and his group of boys will set out to find and kill it. The boys disband, and Ralph feels his power as the leader is weakening.
