What Symbol Does Ralph Represent?
Golding used symbolism in his book , Lord of the Flies, to make the characters and objects in the book tie with real life scenarios. Ralph, the protagonist of the story, represents Democracy. Democracy is a form of government in which everyone has a say in what goes on in the government. It is the from of government that was favored by the group on the island. This is proved when Jack and his dictator like ruling regime was not accepted, resulting in Ralph becoming the leader. Democracy was favored by Piggy especially, because although what he said may not have been conducted, he could still say it.
Democracy was very important in the novel. Think of it this way. If there was to be a dictatorship, or anything that was not a democracy, the group's entire operating patterns would be dependent on one person. If Jack had his way, there would be no signal fire, and hunting would be the only thing that would happen on the island. This is not good, because eventually the pigs would die down, and they boys would never be rescued. Democracy was what kept order on the island, and what made the group eventually become rescued.
